Introduction to the Chakras: A Beginner's Guide

Updated: May 31, 2024

If you have been wondering or interested in Chakras, what they are exactly and maybe how you could start to incorporate them into your life (if you haven't already) to see the shifts that can take place when you apply some of this knowledge, or practice, to your daily routine. (once a week even, depending on what you are going through of course...more stressful or traumatic events, loss, illness, anxiety and/or depression could really be helped by incorporating this practice as part of your self-care routine) It can be considered a complementary form of Alternative Medicine.

(Always consult your Doctor or Medical Practitioner if you have any Medical, Physical or Mental health issue. Energy Work of any kind is not a replacement for Medical Care. It may be considered one part of your Holistic approach to your overall Health, Healing and Well-being, but never meant to replace Medical Care)

My Intention for this blog post is to give you a starting point, an opening, for you to explore Chakras and Chakra Healing. I believe if you are reading this, then it is for you.

I can say from experience (even if it is just 10 minutes a day) of conscious awareness or mindfulness directed towards your chakra system can really help with your overall health and wellbeing. Take some focused energy (Intention) to clear and cleanse one chakra at a time or all of them depending what your current needs are. You don't have to be attuned to Reiki (although it helps) or have any other healing modality under your belt. All you need is at least 10 min and an Intention..maybe one like this:

"I am now opening, clearing and cleansing my chakra, chakras etc...with the loving flow of Universal Life Force Energy, the whitest, brightest, purest healing light, balancing my Chakra system, for my highest good and the highest good of all and So It Is."

(or something along those lines, whatever resonates with you)

Something as simple as that can really help to make a big difference in so many facets of your life (of course if you have more time you can preform a longer ritual with more steps and healing tools...drumming, rattles, chanting the seed sounds, simply wearing the colour of the corresponding chakra you are working with can help to nurture and encourage the balanced, positive aspects of that chakra... carrying a crystal/chakra stone that is attuned to the particular chakra or by using my Chakra Spray, which is Reiki Inspired, made with high frequency, high vibration essential oils and crystals, handmade with love by MOI ☺️🩷to cleanse, clear, balance and raise your vibration, raising your frequency and changing up your environment's frequency..so good, so good!!)

OR... you could have a chakra balancing session or a chakra healing sound bath with me BUT...sometimes 10 mins is all the time you can carve out of your day or week, which its totally fine and is still so doable!)

The healing modalities that I incorporate in my healing business Lady Norway Energy Healing are Reiki, Integrated Energy Therapy ( I also facilitate Soul Star Chakra and Earth Star Chakra Healing...more on that in a future post) and Chakra Sound Healing. They all facilitate opening, clearing, cleansing and the balancing of the chakras. Removing energetic blocks to allow the Universal Life Force Energy (Qi or Chi) to flow freely through all the subtle bodies (physical, mental, emotional and spiritual) uninterrupted. Allowing the body to completely relax in the process, to activate its innate ability to heal itself.

I feel so honoured and I am so grateful to be able to facilitate that flow so that healing can begin.

Such a divinely, intuitively guided and beautiful thing.

I offer in-person treatments and/or remote/distance healing sessions also.

So I am going to start with the main 7 Chakras of the body (because there are a lot of chakras and different levels of the subtle body. There are 114 chakras in the human body, split into the 7 major,

21 minor and 86 micro chakras.

Chakra is the Sanskrit word meaning "wheel" or "circle". A spinning wheel or "vortex" of energy that runs along the spine. It originated in India between 1500 and 500 BC in the oldest Hindu texts called the Vedas.

Through the popularity of Yoga (Tai Chi, Qi Gong, Shiatsu, Reiki )and other healing modalities or practices originating from Eastern cultures, chakras and chakra healing are more mainstream, more accessible (I feel) since when I first was introduced to them over 25 years ago.

I will be starting at the base of the spine, the Root Chakra, and going up through to the Crown Chakra. A brief description of each Chakra, their individual symbols and where they are located on the body and some history of their origin.

The 7 main Chakras:

Root Chakra: Muladhara (Sanskrit meaning: root of existence) 1st Chakra, located at the base of the spine and the perineum. The symbol is of a Red lotus with four petals. There is a square in the centre, representing Earth, with its grounding and foundational energy.

ree

Inside the square is a downward facing triangle, representing the seed of consciousness, the place where our spirit incarnated into the physical form. The four corners of the square represent the 4 directions, North, South, East and West. The centre of the lotus is the bija or seed mantra and it is a symbol for the sound syllable, or seed sound LAM.

Its ruling element is Earth. (..it is considered the place where the Divine Feminine Kundalini Shatki or Life Force lies dormant waiting to be awoken and liberated.)

ree

Sacral Chakra: 2nd Chakra (Sanskrit meaning: sweetness or where your being is established) located just below the navel. The symbol is an Orange lotus flower with six petals, which holds a circle and crescent moon inside of it.

The seed mantra in the centre of the sacral chakra is the symbol for the sound syllable VAM. Its ruling element is Water. There is a dot above the symbol which represents the Hindu deityVishnu.

ree

Solar Plexus Chakra: 3rd Chakra Manipura (Sanskrit meaning: city of lustrous jewels) located in the stomach area, a couple inches above the navel. The symbol is a Yellow lotus with 10 petals and an inverted, red triangle of fire or (Tejas) in the middle.

The seed mantra in the centre is the symbol for the sound syllable RAM. It's ruling element is Fire. Each petal of the lotus is dedicated to one aspect of the deity Bradha Audra.

ree

Heart Chakra: 4th Chakra-Anahata (Sanskrit meaning: unstruck or sound that is made without any two things striking) located in the middle of the chest, near the heart, a bridge between the body (the lower 3 chakras) and the mind (upper 3 chakras) The symbol is of a Green lotus with 12 petals and 2 intersecting triangles in the middle which forms a hexagram, one representing the masculine essence (Shiva) and the other representing the feminine essence (Shatki) Its ruling element is Air. Its seed mantra is YAM.

The deity associated with this symbol is Vaju the god of air and wind or also called the deity of life. Each petal is associated with one of 12 virtues of a pure heart.

ree

Throat Chakra: 5th Chakra-Vishnddha (Sanskrit meaning: purification) located in the neck and throat (front and back) shoulders, cervical spine and part of the brainstem (medulla oblongata) Its symbol is light Blue lotus with 16 petals with all of the vowels of the Sanskrit language in it. In the centre of the symbol is a downward facing triangle with a circle inside it for its ruling element Ether or Space. The seed mantra is the symbol for the syllable HAM.

The deity associated with this symbol is the god/goddess Sadashiva, an expression of the Yin and Yang symmetry (more on this in a future post...)

ree

Third Eye Chakra: 6th Chakra-Anja (Sanskrit meaning: to perceive or to command) located in the centre of the forehead between the eyebrows. The symbol is an Indigo lotus with 2 petals, meant to represent the most important Nadis ( Sanskrit for: subtle energy bodies) In the centre of the lotus is a downward facing triangle representing enlightenment and connection to the Divine. The seed mantra is the symbol for the syllable OM (considered to be the Universal supreme sound and a

representation of the Creator and is a sacred spiritual symbol) Its ruling element is Light. It can also have the symbols for the deity Shiva and for the deity Shatki representing the masculine and feminine principles.

ree

Crown Chakra: 7th Chakra-Sahasrara (Sanskrit meaning: thousandfold) located at the top of the head and is associated with the pituitary gland. The symbol is a Violet (or White) lotus with 1000 petals, with a circle in the middle representing the vacuum of space or a circle of oneness. Its ruling element is Thought. It sometimes has the seed mantra symbol for the syllable OM in the middle of it. The 1000 or Infinite petals of this lotus represent the highest spiritual fulfillment, true enlightenment and your

connection to the Divine. Your direct, energetic connection to your Higher self.

I created a poster on the 7 main Chakras. I chose to highlight some of their keywords, affirmations and signs of balance/imbalance. These are based on my personal experience and with my clients/business experiences. Feel free to use it for yourself or for your clients/healing business if it resonates with you.
